What is CBD-HQ?
CBD-HQ is the abbreviation of Cannabidiol Hydroxy Quinone and was first discovered by Prof. Raphael Mechoulam at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the oldest university in Israel. The synthetic variant of CBD-HQ is also called HU-331, which is written in full as Hebrew University 331.
CBD-HQ is a natural CBD oxidation product with many potential therapeutic applications. CBD-HQ arises from the natural aging process of CBD. Although few studies have been carried out, the small amount of available studies are promising.
CBD-HQ is a quinone variant of CBD. Quinones occur in nature and occur after oxidation of the polyphenols present in plants. A known phenomenon is the oxidation of the polyphenols in an apple as you cut through it. Through the contact with oxygen, the polyphenols in the apple are enzymatically oxidized to quinones, which gives the characteristic brown colour that occurs when you leave the apple for a few minutes.
Although the process of oxidation (tan) in an apple is initiated after a couple of minutes, CBD takes a lot longer. In fact, the CBD-HQ oxidation process goes so slowly, that it can take 10-15 years before CBD has been fully converted to CBD-HQ.
Because it takes so long to convert CBD to CBD-HQ, this variant of CBD is difficult to obtain and the price of CBD-HQ is extremely high, if not priceless. The synthetic variant of CBD-HQ named HU-331 is 1000x more expensive than gold.
CBD-HQ by nature in cannabis
Just as CBN is an oxidation product of THC, CBD-HQ naturally occurs at very low concentrations in CBD-rich types of weeds. CBD-HQ can be found in old hemp fibre and CBD-rich wool species that have been in contact with the open air (for example by poor packaging) for a long time (longer than 5 years). The oxidation of THC to CBN proceeds slowly, but much faster than the oxidation of CBD to CBD-HQ.
During an experiment in 2016 to remove THC from hemp fibre, I discovered a faster way to naturally transform CBD, to CBD-HQ, by using pure oxygen and under controlled climatic conditions. Under ideal conditions, it was possible to convert more than >50% of the CBD, within 3 weeks, to CBD-HQ. A process that usually takes years.
You can compare this to ripening fruit. If you put a banana in a plastic bag, it will mature much faster than outside the bag. This is because mature bananas produce a lot of ethylene. This gas stimulates the fruit to accelerate ripening. In the case of CBD, we do not use ethylene but pure oxygen so that the CBD can mature faster to CBD-HQ, under the right climatic conditions.
Meanwhile, it is 2017 and we have advanced a little further. We are trying to optimize the ripening process so we can turn it into a production process. All so that this powerful form of CBD can be made available to everyone in a very short amount of time.
